About Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande Hiking Tour is a great experience for outdoor enthusiasts who wish to get off the beaten track. Ilha Grande (Big Island), is located in the south of Rio city, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state . It takes about 01 hour to get to the harbor by car, then 30 minutes by boat. The island is known for its beauty, deserted beaches, lush vegetation and a rugged landscape.

Its 193 km² safeguards an untouched Atlantic Rainforest. It also shelters many endangered species, like the brown howler monkey and the maned sloth. The island is a protected area and most of its land is part of the state park. However, small doses of ecotourism is encouraged by the local administration.

The 150 km of hiking trails, link villages to beaches and mountain peaks. Our adventure starts from Vila do Abraão, the largest village of the island. In this hiking tour, you will have the chance to visit incredible beaches. Lopes Mendes is the most popular one, as well as our final destination. It was elected the most beautiful beach of Ilha Grande and one of the most beautiful beaches of Brazil. Trip Advisor’s members ranked Lopes Mendes the 13th most beautiful beach of the world, in 2014.

Tour Program:

Our Ilha Grande Hiking Tour starts with pick up in Rio city between 06:00am and 06:30 am. We drive for about 1.5 hours to the harbor in Conceição de Jacareí, then take the fast boat to the island, arriving there around 09:00 am. From Abraão Village, we start our hike, crossing different beaches .

The trail takes you up and down through hills inside the rainforest, where wild animals like monkeys and birds maybe spotted along the way. Eventually it touches the beaches of Palmas then Pouso, and finally, after 02 hours of hiking, the wonderful beach of Lopes Mendes, between 11:00am and 12:00 noon. After spending some time there, we return to Abraão village to take the boat back to the continent. We are back in Rio city around 08:00pm.

The total walking distance from Abraão to Lopes Mendes is around 8 km. There is an option to take an extra boat from Pouso beach to Abraão Village, on the way back, in case travelers feel tired, and also from Palmas to Pouso, so travelers can spend more time in Lopes Mendes beach.

* If you , are a solo traveler booking this tour, please note that in case no other passenger joins it, we will offer a private tour a day before the trip, for extra R$ 350,00. Clients may decline the offer and request a refund.
